Men &

The Child, Youth and Family Therapy Program provides support and counselling to children, youth and their family members who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. We work collaboratively alongside children, youth and parents to explore hopes and dreams for each unique family, considering new ways to communicate, building safety and trust, and mending relationships.

A household with violence is also often filled with small, seen and unseen actions taken by members of a family to resist violence and to try to protect themselves and others… from the smallest to the tallest. We focus our work on understanding behaviour as it relates to a child or youth’s experience and believe that no child is broken – the way they resist violence often shows they are competent and courageous.

This program brings parents and children together in a supportive way, building on current relationships and creating strong foundations for new ones.

Based on each family’s needs & unique situation, services may include:

  • Individual counselling for children/youth
  • Family counselling where appropriate
  • Individual parent support, group counselling
  • Play/activity-based counselling for the smallest members of the family.

The Children’s Activity Centre within the Emergency Shelter provides a blend of structured and child-led play. We encourage children to explore their surroundings in a safe & nurturing environment that responds to their emotional and developmental needs.

At this time, our work with children, youth and families through this program is being offered in-person and virtually.

Referrals to the Child, Youth and Family Program can be made through FearIsNotLove or through the 24-Hour Helpline at 403-234-7233.
